Diabetes (T1)
Why does no one outside the diabetes community take diabetes seriously? Why is it that when you have to take a day off or are late to work or school because you are sick from diabetes do people treat you like you are lazy and “just don’t want to come in”?
This CHRONIC disease that can cause heart disease, vision loss, lowered immune system, gastroparisis, coma, death and so much more, yet people do not care. I have three hypothesis on why this is, and why it will continue to be unless those who understand the burden of type 1 diabetes start speaking out.
My first assertion is that there is little education given to the general public about T1.
Second, it’s not a disease you usually can see like some other chronic illnesses.
Third, our culture here in America is based on a capitialist, “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality.
