RESIDENT EVIL 3 REMAKE CONFIRMED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
resident evil 0 thoughts
so just beat resident evil 0 after binging it this past week at work and over my weekend! i (generally) liked it! while i get why folks would have issues, idk why it inspires such passionate dislike, glad i didnt steer clear like some suggested. but i do have issues with it too
this is the last of the pre 5 era ive played, i have an interesting expirence with the franchise - started with RE2Make, then REVillage, RE1 Remake (which is still my favorite!), RE3Make, RE4, Code Veronica, RE4Make, and now before continuing the story into 5 - RESIDENT EVIL 0. I've heard many bad things about the game, told to skip it, etc, etc. but ive found a lot of love for so called "bad" things in the past so i decided to give it a fair shake. here are my thoughts! ill start with more negative skewing before positive
i feel ultimately its biggest problem is that it doesn't play to its strengths / what makes it unique. the opening chapter promises a lot of interesting stuff that deflates into a poor imitation of res 1 imo
we get a new unique setting in that of a train! really cool! and we get a partner mechanic which is unique, and was already thinking about ways it could be bent into interesting dynamics - the game forcing you on opposite ends of the map, having one dynamically search for items / recover stuff left behind, puzzles and combat encounters that seperate you and force you to switch between them to help the other, etc.
and while we get a bit of that, the train section is quickly derailed into a cliche res mansion for most of it, and the partner mechanic while utilized sometimes (some of the game's highlights) it really isn't engaged with as frequently or as interestingly as id hope. it just gives you a larger inventory to manage, poor AI that can get in your way when the annoying late game enemies pop up, and due to the amount of ammo and there being two of you the game trains you just to shoot the enemies to death instead of being strategic
while i am a sucker for the reminiscent mansion romping from res 1, it did make the expirence feel a lot blander and just a copy. and instead of playing to its uniquenes with the train longer, its mansion section trying to imitate res 1 doesn't hold up against spencer mansion imo which makes it worse
the bosses and enemies were never too bad, but there were some cheap encounters imo and the stunlock enemies later in the game while never too much or too annoying did lead to some frustration, which i imagine wouldve been heightened if i was low on useful items and didnt have previous saves.
also wish the training facility section used the hook gun once or twice to make you think it was useful before advancing to the labratory, because i left it behind with the train and had to go all the way back to retrieve it because it wasn't used once - which again, a lack of playing to their strengths it would've made for some interesting level design and chances to split the party more by using that in the long training facility section
was also disappointed with rebecca to an extent. i was excited to get more of a focus on her, and while we did a bit, she feels like she's turned into a sidekick in her own game - we get billy's backstory instead of rebecca, and billy gets the final shot and one liner instead of her. and its punishing to play as her, because other than mixing herbs theres not really a fun gameplay reason to want to be her - she takes more damage and does less damage, and can't push heavy crates, making you want to play as billy most of the time. what about giving her a special RPD STARS move that allows her to break out of zombie grapples or some, idk, benefit to playing as rebecca? oh well
sometimes rly frustrating when they arbirtraily assign a character to a task that you can't control - like the final boss i kitted rebecca up because i wanted to fight the boss as rebecca, but then she is forced assigned to AI turning wheel duty and was stuck as billy without the good stuff soooo
like i said, while not utilized as it should've been, i did have highlights where the partner mechanic was done well and made for an engaging expirence getting to switch between both of them and interact to advance one goal. wish they did that more throughout to justify it instead of the usual A and B route which mightve been better imo if they were just gonna do it like this. that would've prob made the disparity between rebecca and billy better - if playing a billy route and can't mix herbs at all, that would've been much more difficult and likewise easier for rebecca but if she takes more damage that makes it harder. though as it stands with both, rebecca just play sthe sidekick healer.
also, the crux of the story - marcus and the containmation was meh. didn't really need that explained from res 1, and marcus is kinda lame. was cool finding out leech boy is marcus, but would've worked better as a shadowy old man with his normal voice instead of leech twink lol. also the enrico bit was half baked at best
but not all negative!
i did like having more rebecca content, and billy while a bit one note was fine enough as a co lead. for story angle, learning a bit more about the messy history of developing the T virus was interesting and how wesker / birkin were early in their careers, and seeing them interact onscreen was great (though weird we didn't get a final cutscene with them?) but those were some highlights for sure.
as for setting, i would've preferred more train but the mansion albeit uninspired was a nice relaxing atmosphere, and i did get into this for one last shot of res 1 2002 vibes and got it. i do rly appreciate having this as an expirence for tank controls / fixed cameras / pre rendered backgrounds. went into this series dreading it, but leaving it not wanting it to go!
a couple solid puzzles too, and things were generally paced well with exploration tho with usual clumsy bumps between transitions like introducing the short lived apes, or a proto tyrant that isnt rly set up. fun nod to res 1 with rebecca on piano fumbling it near the end - wonder if i tried 10 times or smth with rebecca she'd be able to do it without chris breathing down her neck?
and it can't be understated how fucking useful finally being able to drop items was!! and having them marked on map! so so useful, idk why the others don't do that.
but overall, i was engaged and other than a few frustrating bumps i didnt dislike my expirence. it didnt live up to its potential, and is more of a bland expirence compared to what its imitating (res 1 remake) and doesn't really establish its own unique identity like code veronica. but i am glad i played it, had a positive time, and did scratch the itch i was looking for.
ultimately, resident evil 0 isn't terrible imo and is perfectly enjoyable with the right expectations but def has some clumsy and frustrating desicions, a meh story with some interest, and it undermines itself by not playing to its unique strenghts - a unique train setting, utilizing the partner mechanic to its fullest extent, etc. that is prob the worst aspect because you can see how it could've been from the first hour onwards but it pulls the rug out from under you and gives you a cheaper cliche res expirence, but with that in mind i did have a good time and im glad i played it!
i do prefer code veronica still, but i would never call this a "bad" game flatly. dont think it has much in the way of replay value tho, but at some point ill try the hard mode and wesker mode with the extra costumes too
now i say goodbye to the fixed camera era (tho i do have the original res 1 - 3 on emulator for when i need the og expirence!) and will be moving onto res 5 next
