Jako was found in the street by a Tunisian rescuer, who just couldn't pass him by. Still just a big pup, the poor boy had obviously been turfed out because of his twisted limbs, considered to be less than rubbish, left on the street to starve to death, be poisoned, or shot by the government.
RANA were heartbroken when they first met him in December, wondering how on earth they could ever help him. Subsequent enquiries with vets in the UK and Europe about what it would take to make him walk normally brought up such eye-watering quotes that they were at a total loss as to what to do, other than keep him safe in the shelter. As Jako grew up into a beautiful adult GSD, his amazingly caring personality also developed. Jako started spending time with the puppies at the shelter, and keeping them at a safe distance from the bigger dogs. He also befriended every human who cared to pass by, and this in the end is what gave him his chance to life in the real world. In June, during a RANA Volunteer Week, volunteer Wendy met Jako and fell head over heels in love with this sweet boy. She made him a promise that she would fight to get him a new life, took a video and posted and shared him all around Facebook. Thanks to this, he was noticed by some very kind ladies at the German Shepherd Helpline, who instantly fell in love with him and decided to jump in and help him. They offered to fundraise for his trip over, take him to see Supervet Noel Fitzpatrick, foster and rehabilitate him as required, and find an adoption home for him! And so Jako was prepared for travel.
Jako arrived in the UK on 7th November, and was referred to Supervet Noel Fitzpatrick and had both his front legs and ankles fused. He still has a list of other surgeries he is waiting for and is also in recovery for leishmaniasis.

Published by Student Rag: Hearing the phrase “bionic supervet”, you’d be forgiven for assuming that pioneering veterinary surgeon Noel Fitzpatrick is some kind of superhero from a comic book. But you’d be wrong. This extraordinary vet is not a fictional character from a colourful comic strip but is in fact a real person who is changing the world of veterinary science and pioneering new treatments…
