BONUS: some bioraptors from Pitch Black

It was never explained in the movie or in the novelization, but as far as the audience and the characters know, the creatures—the bioraptors—were always there.

Some fans speculate that these creatures were originally surface-dwellers. However, following an environmental catastrophe (such as a volcanic eruption, solar storm, asteroid impact, etc.), they were forced to seek refuge underground. Over time, their biology adapted to the perpetual darkness of their subterranean habitat, making them intolerant to sunlight. This could also explain the lack of plants and water on the surface. As for other animals, well, whatever manages to survive ends up getting eaten to extinction once the eclipse hits.

The planet only appears lifeless, but might actually have a thriving subterranean ecosystem. This notion is subtly hinted at by the presence of glow-worms, suggesting the existence of other potential food sources such as cave insects, fungi, bacteria, and even subterranean fish.

Another possibility is that the bioraptors were not a product of natural evolution but the result of deliberate genetic engineering, mutation, or other forms of artificial manipulation. This theory arises from the improbability of their existence through natural processes on a planet like M6-117.

The military, government, or corporation might have secretly placed them on this planet (or experimented on the creatures already inhabiting it) because its conditions were sufficient to support life, serving as a perfect testing ground for their effectiveness as potential weapons (or medicinal properties). Additionally, a bioengineered weapon vulnerable to sunlight would make them easier to control. The military, or whoever, could deploy them at dusk, and then return weeks later to find their adversaries eradicated.

The desert planet, M6-117, lay in a remote star system, typically avoided by shipping lanes due to its “strange” and “complex celestial dynamics,” which made navigation very challenging. As a result, reaching the planet was no easy task, making it an ideal location for research and experiments. With its triple star system, the intense heat and light would have also eradicated the bioraptors once the testing was complete. If not, they would've eventually starved to death after eating everything on the planet. Yet somehow, they survived—reproducing rapidly and consuming each other in a brutal, self-sustaining loop that ensured their continued existence. I guess the scientists didn't think it all the way through to properly implement a failsafe.

Are they really native to the planet? Or perhaps an invasive species? Maybe they were engineered as biological weapons—or even as a source for a particularly rare medicinal compound, only for the project to spiral out of control and be abandoned?

I’m not sure, but the possibilities are fascinating to explore. It’s also the kind of speculation that sparks ideas for my Pitch Black fanfiction.

Bioraptors were the highly aggressive alien creatures seen in the film, pitch black. Originally, pitch black started life as a script for alien three, and whilst we discuss the aliens that would eventually end up in the repurposed movie, try to keep that in mind and its not that much of a leap to see how it could have worked as an alien film.
