This is the picture that made my girlfriend cry.
She makes my world shine. I get lost in her eyes. I can’t help but look at her with wonder in my eyes.
One day I’ll call her my wife.

In-between all the droplets
I am walking against the crowds. In the famous bottleneck corridor which electrifyingly mirrors the irresistible and mellow deep waters of the sea turned river flowing behind the palaces and universities whose walls I follow, the speeding cars, the filled up buses, the merry groups of pedestrians, the flashing traffic lights and the obstinate orange halo of the streetlamps all participate in creating this tunnel-like sensation, the coming to life of more jammed life, the improbable encounters of high and low incomes, the mute looks scanning covered and uncovered bodies, the splashes of voices and laughters and cries. Like in my yesterday run, my pace is slower than usual, I am rolling on the sidewalk, the sticking gum under my sandal sole has hardened since this afternoon and I can only feel its subtle bump when it touches the floor. The air is heavy, cotton-like with heat and water: I am walking through an invisible cloud of steam and it seems to echo with my moist skin, overwhelmed by the intensity of the heat (airborne and sunborne, earlier) it has been met with since I stepped out of the house mid-afternoon. If hot humid air was a sound, it would be a repeated low and muted gong reverberating from my wet pores out to the zillions of floating droplets making up this ocean of heavy oxygen, in the already overloaded street artery. Never looking back, I keep taking my even steps forward, head high and eyes low under a suede beige cap. My lips are shiny red, another stop light for a few male gazes on the way. What do I look like to them, to the rest of this new world? In the interstitial space that is this blind and ubiquitous avenue, I think about the in-betweens, those which fills up the void before the other, before the next moment, before the next place.
Earlier this morning, I asked what I thought was a difficult question to my partner. Inspired by a novel I am currently reading and which explores the challenges faced by a biracial couple, I wanted to know why she, a Black woman, would ever want to spend the rest of her life, or at least a long time, with me, a white(-passing) person? How could she reconcile herself with the idea that I would never truly be able to understand the fullness of her as the veil of whiteness had blinded me in almost irreparable ways. While she admitted that we lived different lives in different worlds, she highlighted my racial ambiguity and transversal knowledge thereof, in addition to bringing up her need for novelty and difference in long-term love. She then returned the question: why had I never been with a white person before? More than the lack of erotic in white bodies, it was an urge to find my real self in the other’s eyes, face and skin that made me search in love for all that I was but that none could really see. But this was a double-edged sword; as much as I was never really white if juxtaposed with white people, I always ended up being the whitest when with my partner. Which was unfair as the real story was way more complex than that. She then brought up the analogous topic of gender roles and we agreed in our frustration with the rest of the world which seemed to never cease to seeing us as the simple addition of two dichotomous representatives of gender poles whereas our life together and the arrangements and natural inclinations created a much more complex and subtle story about who we were. Not even to mention class issues. All in all, when together, we were far from being what we appeared to be: the categories never seemed to fit as they would encapsulate more than one facet which was split between us. I was the masculine West-African middle-class white-looking dictator femme; she was the feminine South-African upper-class Afro-American/British-looking motherlike woman. We were walking this path of life together, against all odds, and our mixed yet distinct identities, in themselves and with each other, kept echoing and merging and separating, like the humid heat that stuck to my skin tonight.
