This is often how I imagine Lucien trying to fight the mating bond in silence and trying to allow himself to be happy with Vassa. This is all happening without the rejection of the bond. Man's mate doesn't want him, he's allowed to find happiness elsewhere, it's still a bit hard though.
Koschei said he was waiting for ‘his’ Vassa.
This inspired me to explore the thought of what might be happening to Vassa as he starts to taunt her into returning to the lake as she edges closer to some sense of freedom.
Gif: excuse the brown eyes in the gif, I know her eyes are blue. But it did the job, it had to do.🤷♀️

Vassa was practically dashing through the manor before she came up to the mirror, inspecting herself one last time.
She knew she'd outdone herself with tonight's outfit. She had even surprised Jurian on the way out of the dining room leading to the back door. He'd been so surprised he had jokingly grumbled that he also wanted to go on these mysterious dates if he got to play dress up like they did. She had simply laughed and now she was on her way out into the forest landing adjacent to the manor.
He looked up as he heard the rustling coming through the path of trees, leading to where him and Vassa had marked and christened a spot as their peace.
He found his breathe knocked out off his lungs, as she appeared with a small smile on her face. He took her in like the first sip of wine, didn't rush as he let his eyes trace the outline of her burnt orange dress. He traced the lace sleeves that led over her shoulders, that nudged him to follow the way the silk had hugged around her breast and her waist and than led into a flare. He felt even more struck as he followed her smooth leg peeping from the slit of her dress, stumbling upon her feet. The first time he'd ever seen her in - high heels.
He knew he was practically gaping and didn't care if she knew how weak she made him.
"You look so beautiful... So damn gorgeous." he was practically gaping and drooling at her.
"I'd give you a promise for you to stop drooling like that." Smiling under shy eyelids as her cheeks were flushed by his intense gaze that had taken her in so hungrily and unexpectedly. She was shocked by this shy feeling, she had been many things but never shy.
He lifted her chin up and gave her a chaste kiss on the lips, almost teasing her. He pulled away with a scheming smile as if he realized an opportunity to be ceased.
"A promise you said? Go dancing with me, tomorrow night?"
She tried to hide her giddiness but couldn't help but beam at him in utter excitement.
"You aren't fair Mr Vanserra. Look at you trying to get me to agree to another date before the night even begins."
"If I'm to be honest, I saw you in those shoes and I just wanted to take you dancing" a twinkle of wonder in his eye.
Vassa leaned her head back in laughter, amused by his reaction to him seeing her in high heels for the first time.
"Do the great Fae of Prythain know you have a fettish for fashionable shoes?"
"Vassa, you wound me! " he said with mock innocence.
"They'd be jealous to know, that you're the fettish. You in those shoes."
Lucien had this uncanny ability to make her smile and laugh from her belly. She had allowed herself the freedom of growing in love with this playful fae male. She would fight for this...
Her passionate thoughts of this temporary freedom were interrupted...
Interrupted by Koschei's ever tighthening leash on the magical strings that strained her bones. The whisperings that had haunted her to return to that wretched lake.
She fought the whispers off...
Was she wrong to think this way? To Hope this spell could be broken? To fall in love without any hope? Had the flames in her skin burned a hole in her heart? She felt her rage climb up her skin. She was brought back by Lucien gently carrasing her cheek as he looked into her eyes...
"Promise me? Promise me that you will return and dance with me under the stars tomorrow night?" He almost pleaded as he carrased her cheek gently and smiled with sadness in his eyes.
She turned away to avoid his gaze. It had been harder to return to her human form as of late. She could feel the magical strings straining her bones and flesh. She felt the flames screaming at her to be caged to a deathless ancient power...
"Vassa can you hear me? "
The flames in her eyes cleared and his face tighthened in pain. He had felt her fading away lately and he had tried to make the most of their nights, filling them with adventures or silent laughter under the blanket of the stars in the mortal realm.
Wanted to etch these moments into his mind. He wanted them buried so deep in his heart. He tried so hard to fight his desires and kept failing for the sake of... Damn it! Why didn't happiness ever come easily to him? Why could he never have peace without it being soiled by turmoil? When did the thought of spring become so sad?
He was brought back from his thoughts as she gently cupped his face and looked into his eyes, searching for an answer...
"Where do you go? When you battle with yourself like that, where do you go?"
"I... I just get lost in this sometimes" as he gestured between the two of them and a lazy smirk taking over his face.
"Ever the charmer Lucien" she winked at him. "What do you have planned for us tonight?"
"Tonight... Well tonight, you get to judge my cooking..." he blew out a breath nervously
She put her hand over her chest, as tears started to line at her eyes.
"You cooked for me? I have to tell you though, I'm horrible in the kitchen. I tried to fry an egg once and I almost burnt our entire castle's kitchen to the ground. Father was not happy..." a smile of fond memories gracing her beautiful face.
He led her to a picnic set up as he gracefully helped her sit down on the plush blanket. She stretched her legs, and nuzzled into the fuzziness of the blanket basking in the moonlight. She smiled as she took the goblet of wine he had poured for her.
"I'd have never pegged you as a master chef Lucien, although you do make a mean omlette..."
Lucien chuckled as he started uncovering the spread he had prepared for them. Her eyes widened with wonder taking in the different colours and smells eminating from the platters. She seemed to be restraining herself from bursting with excitement. He didn't know why but seeing her so excited and curious filled his heart with hope. A salve to the lingering and forgotten ache.
She closed her eyes and hummed
"This smells so sweet and savory" her senses were engulfed by the scent of warm roasted nuts. "It smells like home..."
Lucien stilled and burst into laughter. She opened up her one eye, peeping at his face. She joined him in laughter as his face was crinkling with joy .
"So you smell warm nuts and you say it smells like home?" still smiling and lightly laughing.
She nudged him playfully before rolling her eyes.
".... and he's supposed to be 200 and something years old"
They fell into a rhythmic conversation as they ate. It had always been this way since he'd first met her. He'd remembered that he was alive. He'd remembered what it felt like to lower the walls, he'd built around himself. He allowed himself to happiness as fleeting as it might be.
They packed the platters and dishes into the basket. They star gazed for a short while, before Lucien moved to help Vassa up so they could return to the manor so she could rest before the rising sun claimed her for it's skies, as first light slowly stalked them.
"Do you mind if we stay a bit longer? I'm not ready to go back to the manor, just yet..."
He wanted to insist they go back to the manor but she looked up at him and he saw the longing and desire that he felt whenever she smiled at him, when her eyes blazed at dawn and when she made little dirty jokes for him when he'd had a difficult day. He smiled in defeat, sat down next to her and nodded patiently at her.
"May I?" she gestured to between his legs.
"Yes, of course. I'd never not want to Vassa.. Not with you.."
She settled in between his legs, and laid back onto his chest. He loved the smell of her wild hair, he clasped his arms around her pulling her in a little closer.
They whispered and told each other fae tales and human tales. They laughed till their sides and cheeks hurt. Her laugh grew sad, he could hear it in her voice as she spoke.
"I wish I could preserve these moments into a snow globe of some sort. So I wouldn't forget them. It's getting harder to..." She looked up at him, dispelling whatever she had wanted to say.
"Watch the sunrise with me please?"
He kissed her forehead and reluctantly agreed not knowing whether to frown or smile at her puppy eyes, sending her into a spell of giggles and him chuckling. Before he could voice his concern about her not spending enough time sleeping lately.
She twisted in excitement and landed Lucien on his back and her straddling him. They stared at each other breathlessly as he watched her eyes tracing his face before they let go and kissed each other passionately.
They drank each other in like parched souls in dying need. Tasted each other like summer teases on a winters morning. Sang a rhythm intune with each other. Kissed by moonlight. Sated and spent.
He looked down at her and smiled as she was slightly flushed from her cheeks to her naked chest lit by the cascading moonlight.
"You're a sight for sore eyes when you blush."
She stared at him blankly and then they both laughed at his silly joke.
They cuddled for a while before her relaxed demeanor had turned thoughtful as she shifted from his embrace to gather her clothing to get dressed. She stared at Lucien with heat and adoration.
"We need to head back to the manor before I burst into flames, in the middle of the forest from foxy influences..."
They grinned at each other, Lucien quickly got dressed and he winnowed them back to the manor.
He was twirling a daffodil in his hand, his thoughts seemingly far away from here. His hair still damp from their bath together. Her skirts must have announced her presence, as he turned to her and looked at her like she was the burning gold in an autumn leaf....
She beamed at him and he returned her smile just as brightly.
"I'm sorry I kept you up till the last hour..." she smiled like a cashire cat.
He grinned at her knowingly. He extended the daffodil to her as they came closer to each other. She took the daffodil from him and blushed slightly.
"I have an answer for you by the way..."
He looked at her, confused.
" I promise, I promise to dance with you under the stars tonight"
He smiled without restraint and took a step closer to her as her eyes began to smolder into flames. She took a step back as she felt the rising sun claim her into the bird of flame to set it's skies a light.
Leaving Lucien staring up into the sky as she soared in rage. Leaving a half burning daffodil floating towards the ground in the space in which she had been...
