Birdback Loyalty Findings
You probably noticed the website and the logo changed lately. Birdback is shedding its old skin for a new one. The odd eyed bird you had grown used to was the emblem of Birdback Loyalty: a pilot card-linked loyalty program created on top of the Birdback Platform. It launched in April 2012 and by October had grown to resemble a network of over 100 merchants and 5000 users primarily in the East London area. The ambition behind Birdback Loyalty was two-fold. On one hand, to test the market’s appetite for card-linked applications, on the other to show how a good loyalty scheme should be done. A definitive proof of concept The setup was simple: the more customers spent, the higher their rate of cashback. Using the Birdback dashboard online and the Birdback iPhone app, customers were able to track how much they spent and earned in cash back. The amount was then transferred to their account. As the data shows: Adoption and conversion numbers exceeded our expectations. Fixing Loyalty For consumers, loyalty has long been synonymous with extra clutter (physical cards, printed vouchers etc.). As for merchants, even in instances where new hardware or technical know-how (QR code or NFC based solutions etc.) are not required, loyalty schemes have still proven to be costly (Daily deals, promotional schemes etc.) As a card-linked loyalty program Birdback Loyalty required no new equipment from the merchant or the consumer. Merchant findings During the 7 months period the pilot ran, our teams tracked, among other metrics, the adoption rate of Birdback Loyalty by merchants’ customer base. With little to no marketing, 32% of customers on average chose to become members. The increase in incremental revenue per customer, attributable to the program was +44%. This means, Birdback customers, over the period, paid 44% more than other customers. Survey findings Our monthly online and in-store customer surveys started in May 2012 and ran until October 2012. 80% of active customers referred Birdback to a friend. 93% of merchants said Birdback’s paperless solution represented their brand very well and appreciated the program’s “elegance” and “seamlessness”. 79% would adopt it durably over any other offer solution. Market Comparison In many ways, our survey findings were predictable. The Customer Acquisition Cost using Birdback amounts to £7.60 compared to the £12 merchants pay using Groupon. Revenue per Birdback customer compared to non-Birdback customer is +£0.90 on average. New customers (decorrelated data / accountable to Birdback only): +7% . But more importantly, while Birdback Loyalty members visited the store 67% more on average, deal websites drive no such increase. Long Term Value However the most interesting indicator was the ongoing effect of participating in the Birdback Loyalty program. It appeared that as customers began to reap their rewards and realise the value of the scheme they started using it more often. Merchants saw an increase in average ticket size of 46% per Birdback Loyalty customer, bringing the ROI of the Birdback Loyalty™ up to 19%.
Now Birdback wants to be more. None of us is as smart as all of us. As talented as the members of a company can get, the bulk of innovation and ingenuity will always lie beyond our walls. The recent rise of platforms and APIs in fields ranging from mobile application stores to cloud communications goes on to prove how enriching it can be to give the developer community access to previously untapped infrastructure. And card-linked applications are the last frontier when it comes to the payment infrastructure.
In the last months, we’ve realized we held a technology that, if opened, could unleash a new wave of innovation focused around payments. We wanted to make it possible for any developer and brand out there, aching for a seamless loyalty solution to finally make it possible. So to you all, now, Birdback got your back.
