thank you, i guess, resident african goshawk, for CHK-CHK'ing so flipping loud near the deck at 6-freaking-AM, after MONTHS of absence (assuming it was breeding), for making sure i didn't sleep in past the asscrack of dawn...
(also, while playing this recording, the one cheeky, very talented fork-tailed drongo in the garden was quietly mimicking it!)
Today, I spotted Whitethroated Sparrows in the backyard, at least four. This is a rare occasion, and I love them, so I tried to get their mugshots with the feeder cam. However, a group of Blue Jays (I counted 15 at one point) all of a sudden decided to like the yard and found the feeder cam wherever I put it. As well as the furries. I will try again tomorrow.
And here is my spirit bird of the day. Saying “WTF?” to everything that happened today. Here’s to hoping for better weather and a better tomorrow. Nighty!
Why must raptors all have some variation on squeak and screech.
ARE YOU HARRIERS OR GOSHAWKS I DO NOT KNOW!!!! Please come closer so I can see your face!!!
Birder problems
>leaving city for the weekend
>debate whether or not to bring camera and long lens in backpack
>end up deciding to leave it at home
>walk through park on way to train station
>immediately spot an Ovenbird, a male Common Yellowthroat, and like six White-throated Sparrows casually ground feeding right in the open
I’m facebook friends with some of the people I run with, and one of them posted a picture of a bird today with the caption, “Snow Egret says happy new year!” and I don’t want to be THAT person because we’re not like close friends, but it’s a Great Egret and it’s bothering me
my dad has a tan line from where the strap on his binoculars are on his neck
