Some seasons are more brutal on wildlife. Between coyotes, cats, and birds of prey, all of the separate breeding families of California Quail near my home near Bend, Oregon lost their hens. As a result, multiple generations of offspring collected together and traveled in collective coveys far earlier in the year than they usually do. The dads did well to raise their young.

Many birds are more colorful and have more dramatic patterns than hummingbirds. However, they are most fascinating birds to watch as they buzz like bees across the landscape and hover nearly motionless as they feed. This female rufous hummingbird seems to perfectly balance between earth and sky as it feeds on flowers near Bend, Oregon.
