Some seasons are more brutal on wildlife. Between coyotes, cats, and birds of prey, all of the separate breeding families of California Quail near my home near Bend, Oregon lost their hens. As a result, multiple generations of offspring collected together and traveled in collective coveys far earlier in the year than they usually do. The dads did well to raise their young.
