My second attempt at birdy bread. I hope Sassy like it! If not, the chickens will be happy to take care of it 😄
I made my own little version of Birdy Bread for my boys at today's Bird Club Meeting! Shut up, I know, I'm a BirdNerd™
How I make birdy bread (the lazy way):
•Preheat the oven to a temperature. Pick a number between 200 and 400 and go with it. What was the last temp you used to bake cake? That should be fine.
•Grab every bird-safe fruit, vegetable, and herb in your house.
•Put some in a blender. Use your own judgement. A quarter of a sweet potato, half a banana, a few pieces of broccoli, a couple slices of ginger, etc.
•Blend thoroughly
•Apologize to your bird(s) for the noise.
•Put it in a bowl now.
•Add some thickening agent. Flour is my go-to, but I also put in dust from previous pellet meals and grains like oats, barley, and barley. Mix it in. You want it to be reasonably thick, so it doesn’t drip like a liquid.
•Get out a muffin sheet and put your batter in there. A halfway full should be good. I find Holly eats about that much or maybe less, so scale up or down depending on your bird’s size. You can always break up the cooked muffin.
•Feeling fancy? Oven not heated yet? Sprinkle some chop on top. Pellets look good too. If you have a pretty unselective eater, seeds will make a nice treat (sometimes bird won’t eat anything else if seeds are an option, so maybe don’t try this until you’re confident your bird won’t cherry pick). Press them down with a spoon so they stick.
•Now put them in the oven! Check on them every 10 minutes or so. Your bird won’t mind if they’re a little under/overcooked.
•Freeze some and leave some in the fridge for the next couple days.
•Boom! You’re done! Congratulations!
Other things you can try:
•Adding chop, grains, or pellets straight to the mix. It gives it texture and while it doesn’t look pretty, your bird won’t care.
•Offer it to your bird frozen! The novel texture and temperature might be fun.
•Take a a tablespoon, water it down, and use it to syringe train.
