In lieu of simply 'blacking out' their social media, a friend of mine - and a fellow June baby - had the lovely thought to donate to a handful of charities and to ask any friends and family who are open to it to match one of those donations. Naturally, I thought this was a wonderful idea, and had to keep the train going. Narrowing down to three choices was tricky, but in honour of my 29th birthday, I have chosen to donate $29 each to @blacklegalactioncentre @cafcan_org and @taibu_chc. So it’s one week until my 28th birthday 🥳!! As you may have noticed (or may not 😂) every year on my birthday for the last 6 years, I’ve run a fundraiser for @cityhospice which is the hospice that looks after me, and provides support to my loved ones. I also encourage people around the world to donate to their local hospice. I’ve always thought it’s a lovely way to celebrate another year of life for me, to use my advocacy as a way to spread some kindness to vital services and the people who need them. But this year I’m going to be a little bit selfish; this year, if you are one of the amazing people who usually donates to a hospice in my name, please consider donating to our wedding fund instead. It doesn’t need to be masses of money to make a difference; even a fiver will help! I don’t talk about finances often, but my family are not well off, and we never will be. Most of us are too unwell to work, and even when my parents worked (my mum was actually medically retired five times and kept going back to work until she couldn’t, and dad still works full time with rheumatoid arthritis on chemo) they chose to work less hours for less money to spend time with me; time we weren’t sure we’d get more of. My fiancé works two jobs, but he’s also now a full time carer (something he’s had to get used to), and obviously our romance has been something of a whirlwind… not a lot of time to save 😂 Our wedding is mostly being funded by kindness and love; not just money, but skills and donations from other weddings etc. And for that kindness, I’m beyond grateful. I never thought I’d live long enough to fall in love and get married; I wouldn’t even let myself dream about it. But by some miracle, it’s happening. And I’m beyond touched by everyone who’s helped us get here ❤️❤️❤️ My plan to continue fundraising for city hospice is to do something big next year after the wedding (currently it’s top secret!), so they’ve not been forgotten!
