A Closer Look At How Controversy Hurts Some But Not Others: Nate Parker And Donald Trump

Nate Parker’s film Birth Of A Nation opened this past weekend. Despite the film having been acquired by Fox Searchlight Pictures for a record breaking $17.5 million dollars, the film opened and made only $8 million dollars, not even fully recovering its $10 million dollar budget in its first weekend. This is despite the film receiving positive reviews from critics. The biggest problem with the film not making money is that the star of it was the reason that it didn’t do as well as it could have. 

Nate Parker’s recently resurfacing rape charges and his reluctance to discuss them or show remorse seemed to have overshadowed the film and caused people to boycott it. Even his costar in the film, Gabrielle Union, says that she can understand the boycott. But why does it seem that the same controversy that will most likely hang over Nate Parker’s head and career for years to come, continue to propel people like Donald Trump further into the spotlight?

The Republican nominee for president finds himself continuing to battle against his past. Recently a tape of a 2005 conversation was released and the tape finds Trump talking about how he doesn’t mind sleeping with married women and has no problem with grabbing women by the crotch area if he so chooses. Another interview surfaced as well, this one with Howard Stern. On that tape, Trump comments creepily on his daughter’s looks and also told Stern that it was alright for him to refer to Trump’s daughter Ivanka as a ‘piece of ass.’ Trump’s supporters continue to support him, despite these and other derogatory comments he’s made about women. Even now, people are having battles on CNN regarding whether or not what he said is that bad at all.

The double standard here is obvious but it goes beyond just Nate Parker and Donald Trump. When it comes to people of color making mistakes, for some reason we can’t ever be separated from our issues. We take on the face of whatever crimes we committed. Nate Parker was acquitted of his crimes. Donald Trump’s ex-wife Ivana went on the record in court and talked about how he brutally raped her, and yet he still gets a pass. Wrong is wrong, and this cannot be disputed. However, the way that some people are vilified and others are uplifted is disgusting.
