The Bisexual Indian Community

The conversation around bisexuality is disturbingly limited. There have never been enough bi TV characters. I’ve never read a book with a bisexual protagonist. The media often portrays openly bisexual celebrities as homosexual. 

Bi erasure is a very real phenomenon that I myself have felt a victim of. However, most people in the United States have at least heard of the word bisexual, even if their concept of it is skewed. Although this may seem trivial, it is actually something to be grateful for. The ability to have a word to describe yourself, a label, an identity is a very powerful thing. It can give you a feeling of oneness with others who categorize themselves in the same way. It allows for a sense of community. Having a word to describe yourself is a powerful thing. It validates your experiences and your existence. 

Unfortunately, not everybody has this privilege. In the Indian community, homosexuals are regularly seen on par with unicorns. They are viewed as stories to be talked about and speculation often occurs on their legitimacy. This is often times how bisexuality is seen in America. However, in India, bisexuality is even less than this. It is not even a unicorn to speculate the existence of. The idea itself is absent. And thus, due to a lack of a cohesive identity, there is a lack of a bisexual Desi community. 

This is why I am creating this blog. To create a space to start a discussion of bisexuality within the context of being Indian. To help myself and others who may be struggling to understand who they are. To let other bisexual Desis know that they are not the only ones. To fill the void of utter nonexistence that has been felt by so many bisexual Indians.
