what abt... middle school boyfriends newmann.

this is all pulled entirely from my middleschool experiences. anyway. newt touches hermann’s arm when they slow dance at the end-of-the-year dance and hermann almost passes out on the gym floor (he doesn’t but he does start sweating so badly newt thinks he’s going to throw up and makes him sit down on the bleachers). they go to the school carnival together and newt wastes $50 trying to win hermann a goldfish and when he finally does hermann doesn’t even name it after him. THEYRE ON LIKE THE ACADEMIC TEAM TOGETHER...THE ROMANCE.....maybe they’re team co-captains and that’s how they meet, they won’t stop arguing over all the answers. they can’t see PG-13 movies together on dates because newt is so short all the movie theater employees refuse to believe he’s old enough to. sometimes hermann rides on the handlebars of newt’s bicycle.

also they still have the same birth years so it’s not just middle school boyfriends newmann it’s EARLY AUGHTS middle school boyfriends newmann. they instant message every night. they have photobooth strips of them sitting awkwardly next to each other hung up in their lockers. newt’s signature on his cell phone is something like ~*~*~*~newt + hermann 5eva❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️~*~*~*~ and hermann thinks it’s SOOO romantic. one time newt asks one of those paper fortune tellers if he and hermann will get married one day and he cries when it says no (flash forward 20 years he tells hermann this story a few months after their wedding and hermann teases him lovingly about it)

“Turn left!” Boyd yelled. “Your other left!”

“I’m working on it!” Ned snapped. They were in a high speed chase, the cops right on their tail. If they got away with this, though, it would be legendary.

An oscar. They were in the middle of stealing an oscar! How many people would be able to say they did that?

Not them, if Ned didn’t pick up the pace.

Drifting around the curve, Ned grit his teeth and slammed on the gas pedal. Just one more mile and they’d be out of this god forsaken city and out on flatlands. His baby could outrun any vehicle if they were on flat lands.

They were close. So incredibly close.

The rev of the engine. The heart stopping adrenaline. Boyd beside him saying “go, go, go.”

It was exhilarating.

The sound of sirens was gradually fading, the adrenaline was starting to fade, and Boyd was starting to laugh.

“We did it,” he breathed, laughing and clutching his stomach. “We stole a motherfucking Oscar!”

Ned grinned. “Hell yeah we did!”

“God, I can’t believe we pulled that off.” Slowly, Boyd stopped laughing, just breathing.

“You’re incredible,” Boyd mummered. A glance and Ned could see the soft smile on his face, the moon lighting his face and the stars reflecting in his eyes.

Ned turned to face the road again, smiling. Yeah, they stole an Oscar, and it was damn awesome, but Ned thought…

Well Ned thought stealing this man’s heart would be even better.

also ngl i really love episode 5, where they kill the beast. griffin just has this wonderful way of weaving stories that feel like, “we’re supposed to be doing this. everything we have done prior in our life has lead to us being here,” and i feel like that was really shown in that episode
