the spec biology posts have me thinking about jester. and I noticed that we see every single member of the cast make hand motions that involve separating the fingers, except jester, who, might be limited to just opening and closing his hands. This one needs a read more
and in the image! his fingers are really fucking long! but when we see him on stage, his arms are normal length and his hands seem to be in fixed poses.
I might be going insane but it seems like the maximum range of motion he can get is curling his fingers, and that might be why his default pose has his arms folded behind his back- out of sight, out of mind, you won't notice that he can't move his fingers like anybody else would.
All of them stand with their arms either folded in front of them or at their side (ticket taker has one arm behind him and the other tipping his hat) and when his hand is open, its always the same pose, just rotated. it looks incredibly stiff, like he's missing joints. I don't know if those are his real arms. When he grabs pierrot's hand, his thumb is still up like in the default pose seen, but the fingers curled, and the entire arm is stiff and more rigid than you would expect a limb facing resistance to be. I think that he is limited to just being able to curl and uncurl his fingers, and again in that resting pose, just curled fingers, and his arms look, limp? ish?
I will note in the first comic about pierrot's hair we see jester use his hands quite a bit, and in all the comics after that, we get that same curl uncurl motion range. I think that his ability to use his hands was retroactively removed. I mean. Look what he'd be doing if he had the option.
We know he's a theater kid, there's no way he's limiting himself to 2 hand positions by choice. I rest my case on that matter, at least. As for where his arms actually are, I'd say concealed in the baggy part of his pants. they all have slutty soup can waists so it's hard to say for sure, but I bet his arms could fit. And we know he can bend over, because, at least from looking at the top image his elbows seem level to his waist.
There is also the one finger held up sprite, so it might not be all 4 fingers curl at once, but they can only curl and do no complex motions. (There are some complex motions in the shadowed AMA sprites but I wonder if those were made before that change because it does seem consistent past that point)
ACtually! looking at the AMA sprites. who the fuck holds their arm like that. do that right now. its weird. the most natural way is to hold your hand under the arm, at the elbow, which we see doctor do in a similar pose. In fact, it seems like he's trying to do the same pose, but can't.
In the hand open version of the sprite, it still looks stiff, and there's a crease around the wrist (like fabric catching on a joint. perhaps.) and the second picture has both arms... where is his other hand? what is it doing ..

(I have also been made aware of the possibility that jester was feeding himself to pierrot, and perhaps his arms were what was lost, so they're not hidden at all, just gone. Who knows! But if that picture is from columbinas death, after the potential self feeding occurred, then likely not.)
