here's my take on people shitting on john and liking arthur: WE ALL LIKE ARTHUR!!!!!!!! OK!!!!!! john is literally arthurs foil. arthur failed with mary. arthur had a son with a girl who he abandoned because he was a criminal and they both died. everyone being like "har har john cant raise his son or make his wife happy" OK!!! DID U MISS EVERYTHING WITH MARY!!! arthur is literally also a failed father. arthur wanted john to do better because he couldn't do better. OF COURSE john can't do better. he's living in the shadow of his martyr best friend. he's constantly at war with the parts of arthur he wants to carry with him and the parts he wants to forget. the "dont be two men" quote. arthurs quote in the journal after that letter from mary "i was trying to be two men and it turns out i wasnt either of them" It's all right there. and also they're in love
