In a climate where “grabbing” has become a phrase in our national conversation, where our president has bragged about violating personal boundaries -- “the impossible” -- by “grabbing” women . . . 

You went with this for your end-of-the-year slogan?

For a school whose local orbit churches are ashamed to admit a connection because BJU’s reputation for sexual scandal is so pervasive, for a school whose recent student just last year was arrested for forcible sexual assault of 3 minors . . . you went with this?

This is as ridiculous as your White Out.

This is as tone deaf as your “American History Month” in February.

For all our obsession with branding, you do such a rotten job at it.

Remember Bob Jones University’s new Center for Global Outreach’s September effort, #GoGreenville?

I didn’t. Until this morning. 

Just after the Saturday Market, with its foodie Taco Trucks and beautiful local produce, beyond the anti-abortion advocates and Anthropologie and before the Mast General Store, Bob Jones University sent up a tent with a banner, several Rubbermaid coolers, and boxes of Quaker Chewy Granola Bars from Sam’s. I spotted one BJU employee -- who, to her credit, was exceptionally polite, professional, and kind -- and approximately 4-6 students. Most of the students were visibly uncomfortable and frustrated. 

One young man was, however, a little too comfortable with the whole endeavor, sidling up to me as I passed, walking at my same pace, and asking if I’d like a bottle of water. It was too familiar. Please instruct him to not do that.

BJU, really. This isn’t ministry. The nice lady was commendable. She deserves big kudos for making the whole exchange cheerful. But the students don’t like it, and the ones who are good at it are much too good at it. 

You’re not helping your local reputation.

What’s the role of Bob Jones University’s new Center for Global Opportunities?

Guilt memes. 

It fits with the Dean of Students’ approach to his job. He described it last year:

Is that what anybody wants for their 18yo? It’s taken all of us decades to recover from this kind of mind game. BJU is losing students, but still it continues with this kind of appeal.
