Do I have an obsession with Troy Calypso? Yes. Am I ashamed of it? Also yes.
Thoughts on Troy Calpyso?
Tory Calypso is the best example of wasted potential in all of Borderlands! Gearbox set him up as the brother to an arrogant and tyrannical sister (Tyreen), always being degraded by her and called a “leech”. In one of the missions, there is even a “Team Troy” and “Team Tyreen”! It seemed like foreshadowing to something bigger down the road. I thought that towards the end Troy would attempt to go against her and take the power for himself, finally standing up to her and fulfilling his character arc.
Instead, Troy just dies lamely and Tyreen fulfills her original plans. I feel like the story got lost in Borderlands 3, Troy definitely felt like an underdog antagonist that would rise up against Tyreen. I hosted an hour stream once about how I’d rewrite Borderlands 3, and the character arc (or lack thereof) of Troy Calypso was a huge part of what I wanted to fix. I wanted dynamic characters, but the Calypsos were static and that was hugely disappointing, especially because it seemed that Gearbox was building up to a character arc for Troy.
This is not to say I hate Troy, on the contrary, I believe that he deserved better writing. Thank you for the ask! :D
