What really is the English Term for Dinuguan? =.=
Today's lesson in Ivy News is about Namul, a vegetable dish in Korea. While I was reading the article, I suddenly remembered what Kuya Ronald told us last Sunday about food and thought of Dinuguan. I wanted to share it to my students but, I scrunched my nose and frown at the thought of a Filipino Dish "Dinuguan."

I asked my TCs (Team Captains) at work what the English of "Dinuguan" is. And TC Rue said it's
Chocolate Churva. haha. Aigoo. So I tried to search it online and wiki said it's called something like "Blood Stew" or "Pork Blood Stew" which sounds morbid, I think. So scratch that! >.< And the fact that Wiki isn't something you could really trust that much, I decided to look for some answers in Yahoo answers. And found some really interesting and funny ones. One of them answered that since it's name, why do you have to translate it in English, just tell them it's name and the ingredients if they ask. True enough. She, however, claimed that Dinuguan is actually from a European Dish called the "Spartan Blood Stew" and the recipe and every ingredient and cooking method involved are exactly the same as what we do here in the Philippines. Looked for it as well and found that it really is the same as Dinuguan. But I think they have a better name for it: black soup / black broth. Spartan Blood stew was a staple soup made of boiled pigs' legs, pork, and vinegar while Diniguan is Filipino stew made of pig's blood, pork, chili, and vinegar.

Another name was "Black Pudding Sauce" which I doubt. Saw the pictures and it's really different. Black Pudding is actually a wide variety of sausages containing blood. Yes, it does contain blood but it's not the same as Dinuguan. I don't think I should post the other names they call it here, since it's just too disgusting to be a name for a food. But the answer that the one who asked the question chose is "Don't ask, just eat" dish. haha. They say it's delicious, though it's a favorite dish of Filipinos, I've only tried having this dish once. It doesn't go well with my taste buds, I think... ahaha. It tastes bland for me, or maybe I just don't know how to eat delicious cuisines (according to my dad...). Anyways, I have to end this now. haha. I've decided. I'll call it, Chocolate Churva! XDDD No, just kiddin'. I'll call it Black soup or broth. It doesn't sound that gross. ^o^ anch ^o^
