I went to James Spooner's book event at M.A.P. Technologies in Baltimore. It was part of his book tour for his award winning graphic novel memoir title The High Desert. It also was a punk show, with a local band named Pearl (which I really recommend).
It was nice to go because he's a friend of mine (that I usually pester online, so now I could pester him in the real world). He's the co-creator of AfroPunk and my blog, Black Witch, originally got its start on AfroPunk before it jumped the shark thanks to Matthew, the other co-founder. I got him chocolate covered coffee beans from a local Black-owned chocolatier, Jinji Chocolate. He's Vegan so I made sure it would fit his diet :3 Or I would have gotten him local ice cream from Black-owned ice creamery, Taharka Brothers.
The vid and pic was taken with my selfie drone, my Pixy. It surprised Spooner when I pulled it out because, well, it's a flying selfie camera. He exclaimed at least three times that it was very "sci-fi" lol I suggested to him to take a 360 vid, which you see. I also was ran down by the owner of M.A.P. as he asked "Excuse me! What is that and how much is it?"
I have a small but expanding gallery of noteworthy people with either off-guard deadpan or curiously amused faces (not pictured here). I have been showing my Pixy off to friends in Rock so I'm getting a small stable of footage.
My mask is my design and 3d printed by me. A friend had already described it as "Raver Scarecrow" lol
Time for another Art Breaks, brought to you in partnership with @mtv! Our video this week was created by activist, artist, and writer, Tourmaline and asks us to consider how the flowers and pollinators that resist and survive even the most inhospitable circumstances invite us to engage with the pleasure of embracing our whole selves. Pollinator in the Pleasure Garden (2021) expands her body of work on 19th century, Black-owned, New York City pleasure gardens.
Tune in next week for our fourth installment of Art Breaks. Don’t forget to see this video in Times Square at 1515 Broadway and check out the full-length videos on MTV and their sister networks!
