This particular one is by Maarten de Vos who painted this in 1599. Adoration of the Magi usually shows three wise kings visiting baby Jesus and offering him gifts, traditionally gold, frankincense and myrrh. The three wise men are often depicted as coming from three different parts of the world and here we see an extravagant Balthasar, the Moorish or African wise man. de Vos gives us a richly adorned and ornate magi, decked out in a gold crown and sceptor. He is accented with pearls in his crown and his ear. He crown shows us engraved gems as well as faceted stones. His gift is just as ornate and very appropriate for the Renaissance period: a nautilus shell in gold. These artistic items were favorites for collectors in the Renaissance, a union of nature’s perfection and man’s skill with gold.” - @justinkprim. They were famous in their times but we don't learn about them; how they shaped Europe's history is hidden from us. Germany likes to pretend that migration is a relatively new phenomenon, that Black people recently arrived, that we haven't been an integral part of Germany since before the place even got its name "Germany". Hint: where do y'all think emperor Hannibal found the elephants he brought over the Alpes with him when he conquered what is today Germany, 2000 years ago? Back to topic: The book features essays by Black German youth and grants us insight how they experienced the process to learn about these hidden legends. "A large number of Afro-Turks were among the half-a-million Muslims from Greece who were forcibly exchanged for a million Christians from Turkey in the population swap that came after the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. For the Afro-Turks, the transfer represents “a second trauma” and a “second displacement,” explains Lulufer Korukmez, a Turkish academic who studied the group, at Ege University in Izmir. Ironically, one of the main promoters of the plan was League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Fridtjof Nansen, who believed that creating more ethnically homogeneous states would diminish forced displacement and war in the long run.
