🖤✨ It’s Sistah Scifi’s Birthday! ✨🖤

Started in 2019 by @isisasare, Sistah Scifi is the first Black-owned bookstore in the United States focused exclusively on science fiction and fantasy, as validated by the @americanbooksellers. What began as a bold intervention in publishing has grown into a national movement with nearly 65,000 engaged readers across the U.S.

This birthday lands during Black Futures Month, and honestly? That alignment is poetic. Sistah Scifi exists because Black futures are not optional, speculative, or distant; they are necessary, intentional, and already unfolding.

To celebrate, here are three must-read books that embody Black Futures energy: 📘 Death of the Author by @nnediokorafor – Speculative, meta, and deeply rooted in African futurist storytelling. 📕 The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin – World-shattering power, survival, and systems collapsing (as they should). 📗 The People’s Library by @thewordslinger – Memory, rebellion, and the danger of who controls the future.

Day 3 of #BlackFuturesMonth comes with a double punch from two heavy hitters: Alexis Pauline Gumbs @alexispaulinegumbs & Tatyana Fazlalizadeh @tatyanafazlalizadeh. These two weren't playing around with the Black feminism convo. 

Tatyana describes her poster: “Black women and girls fight against a lot of things in our daily lives. Misogyny and anti-blackness to begin. My poster depicts a teenage black girl wearing the names of black women who have lost their lives due to state-sanctioned violence, street harassment, transphobia, misogynoir, sexism, and racism. Paired with an excerpt from Audre Lorde’s poem “Harriet”, my poster illustrates the fight for black women and girls to live freely, to speak and be heard, to be seen, to be valued.”

Sky Full of Elephants by @cebocampbell asks a question that lingers long after the last page: In a world without white people, what does it mean to be Black?

This is a story about aftermath, inheritance, and becoming, about a father and daughter crossing a transformed America, reckoning with grief, survival, and who they are when the world reshapes itself overnight.

We are an abundant people. Because all that we can imagine, we can make real. We are light in the dark. Sunshine itself, upright and walking. Imagine the world you want. Everything you need to bring it into reality already lives inside you. Together.
