On This Day in New York City History March 16, 1827: The Freedom Journal which was fhe first African American-owned and operated newspaper in the United States was founded by John Brown Russwurm and Samuel Eli Cornish. The newspaper covered such issues as education, health, jobs and social events for free blacks not only in NYC but throughout the Northeast. After a falling out between co-founders, the focus for the newspaper would center on the movement for the return of Blacks to Africa in the form of the new colony of Liberia. This practice established by the American Colonial Society started in 1820. Liberia would become the first African colony to become an independent nation in 1847. Leonidas Harris Berry (July 20, 1902 – December 4, 1995) was an African American & pioneer in gastroscopy & endoscopy. He served as the president of the National Medical Association from 1965-1966. After graduating from Wilberforce University (1924), moved to Chicago where he received a 2nd B.S. degree from the University of Chicago, followed by a M.D. degree from the Rush Medical College of the University. Also received a M.S. degree in Pathology from the University of Illinois Medical School (1933). Awards: Rudolph Schindler Award 1977 from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Distinguished Service Award from the National Medical Association. 1st Annual Clinical Achievement Award from the American College of Gastroenterology. Freedom Award for Public Service from the Chicago Chapter of the NAACP. Today’s #HistoryBooksatmyJob post was inspired by a conversation with a customer about The Negro Motorist Green Book aka the Green Book and another conversation with a coworker who has done three cross country drives in the past.

For those who don’t know what the Green Book was, it was created by African American mailman Victor Hugo Green in 1936. Initially the Green Book highlighted places in New York City where Blacks could safely get a hotel room, shop and dine without being refused service. Later editions of the book expanded to the rest of the United States, Canada, parts of the Caribbean and parts of Mexico.

You would think that the American idea of hopping into your car and going wherever the road led you applied to all. It did not. The book highlighted such perils that African Americans would face while on the road such as “Sundown Towns” and white only establishments, especially in the Jim Crow South. The book did an amazing job in trying to steer blacks to safe business that would gladly have their business. The book ceased publication in 1966. Here is the selection of books for this week:

On This Day in Baseball History February 9, 1971: Negro League great and former MLB player Satchel Paige is nominated for Hall of Fame enshrinement via the Hall of Fame's Committee on Negro Baseball Leagues. Paige would become the first former Negro League player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame via this committee.
