New course, new notes
Yesterday I had the opportunity to present at my FIRST National Conference - The Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) on ‘Resilience and African Americans - Does it Perpetuate Structural Inequalities?’ specifically speaking to Resilience and Mental Health among African Americans 👨🏾🏫👨🏾💻 • I’m forever grateful to have been able to present at my first national discipline conference along aside the Dean of College, Dean of my program, and two other doctoral colleagues. The icing on the cake was being able to meet Social Work Pioneers©️whose work I’ve not only read but cited in my research inquiries. It was a great set up from the beginning of the week that was quite strenuous and left me wanting to quit my program—-let alone present to anyone, I was defeated. I’m grateful to my family and friends for always and continuing to cheer me on—the fight continues. The pressure is now being applied and I’m quite excited to see the research and publications that come from this experience. • • • #sswr #socialworkresearch #presentationlife #socialwork #socialworklife #phd #phdlife #phdstudent #phdjourney #blackphdstudent #blackphdstudent #blackphds (at Marriott Marquis Washington, DC) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7dsfNXptqz/?igshid=1vr98fip2zrn7
I realize what a privilege it is to be able to pursue this doctorate and I do not take this role lightly. All of the reading 📖 writing papers 📝 and late nights are greater than me. I am doing this for my culture, for those who have been told that they are not smart enough and the disadvantaged and marginalized. How long can systems and institutions continue to fail those who need it most? Education with dignity should be what we all aim for. I pray that we are headed in that direction. Now, back to typing 👩🏾💻👩🏾🏫 #doctoralstudent #nyusteinhardt #blackexcellence #BlackPhDStudent #Education #nyusteinhardt #NewYorkUniversity (at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development)
