so here are my genuine thoughts on the jennie kim n - word situation because this is the internet and i do what i want (reminder that im black) (rant)

i saw the most ragebait comment section yesterday on the predebut video of jennie kim singing swimming pools by kendrick lamar, and some of yall are actually insane for the things you guys say.

starting off, lets view the history of the derogatory slur itself. bbc — adl — aaregistry. now if you were to read any one of these articles, you would know the slur rooted from the latin word niger which means black, and became popular during slavery, then we reclaimed the word. that sums it up.

now as for the debate on if jennie herself said naega (meaning i or me in korean) or nigga. kendrick lamar did not put one korean word in the actual song, and even if jennie did really replace the slur with naega, it wouldn't make sense. 'me, why you babysitting only two or three shots'. you can hear her loud and clear saying what everyones in denial about.

now that weve cleared things up about what word jennie kim truly said and the history of it, some comments really ticked me off, so lets answer some of those.

c :: it was predebut, shes changed now. the scandal itself was twelve years ago, and shes had plenty of time to apologize, but she hasnt. im not saying your fave is a blatant racist, but after more than a decade, she still hasnt apologized. shes a grown woman who knows what it means now, nothings stopping her but her defenders.

c :: if the word is so bad, why is kendrick saying it? weve generally reclaimed the word and use it as slang or even terms of endearment, while we are able to use this word, any other race using the slur is prohibited for a reason; it was used during slavery as an insult, and still is.

c :: yg made her do it. while this could very well be true, she still had the option to say no or even replace the word with something else, there are plenty of options. many idols have replaced it most commonly with baby or boy/girl, why couldnt she?

c :: she was just singing the song word for word. and thats exactly the problem. while others replace the word or even skip it, she decided to say it and say it with her chest. she couldve been forced or pressured back when she was fifteen, but shes thirty now and still hasnt uttered one sorry about the situation.

c :: its just a word. now this is the one that ticked me off the most i think. if youve read anything of this post, you would know that the slur can, but should not be used by anyone that isnt black and theres a reason for that; racism. its deeply tied to racism, and no matter how much you ult her, it was still wrong and easily avoidable.

now that weve got this all down and youre somewhat educated on the harm of this particular slur, heres my opinion on this.

i think that if jennie decides to apologize in the near future, things would be a lot easier on her. the damage has already been done, so im not saying an apology will fix anything, but apologizing would at least prove shes taking accountability and acknowledging her mistake.

as for blinks, some of you guys are genuinely insane for saying so? at a situation like this. not only is it immature, but its also ignorant and harmful. it doesnt matter if its a part of the song, it doesnt matter if she said naega, it doesnt matter if yg made her do it, she should still apologize.
