Somewhere in the West
Continuing my month long series of posts with images made in New Mexico with the Great Divide as my focus or jumping off point: fairly soon after climbing up and over the Black Range, I rolled into the small western town of Hillsboro. Sometimes one reaches a small burg like this and there is absolutely nothing in terms of services. And then, on the other hand, one stumbles into a gem: historical wood frame buildings, cool people, with healthful, tasty food. To wit: my lunch at the General Store Café. I heartily recommend this place; here is its history:
The Hillsboro General Store Café is located in a adobe building built in 1879 and used as a bank, telegraph office, stage stop and eventually a storeroom for the adjacent Miller Drug Store. In 1914 the main building was destroyed in a devastating flood and business moved into the adjacent building where it continues today. Luckily many of the original artifacts from the buildings' many uses have survived to this day providing visitors with a glimpse of life in the late 19th century. As a central meeting place it also offer visitors a view of rural New Mexico life in the 21st century and continues to serve as a rest stop for travelers crossing the Black Range. (source)
After being in the wilds for hours, I very much enjoyed this grilled cheese with green chiles, salad, and coffee. If I'm ever anywhere even close to this town and café, I will go out of my way to return.
