Sorry, blackthorns as a concept are so gothic. What do you mean there are a bunch of orphaned kids with dark hair, pale skin, and creepy/mesmerizing blue eyes? What do you mean the oldest is constantly drugging his uncle to keep him sane? What do you mean the uncle is a raving lunatic hidden in the attic who befriends vampires and is weirdly obsessed with the ancient history/myths his family is named after? What do you mean the only Blackthorns who don’t have startlingly dark hair are half faerie, smelling of the wild woods, with horrible knowledge, and ears like knives? What do you mean they’ve looked the same for the last 200 years? What do you mean a villain is trying to hunt them for their blood? What do you mean they listen to the raging sea on stormy nights? What do you mean they wake up every day to see their brother wearing the face of the father he killed?

this took so long to finish you can see my style changing halfway through lol. it was super fun trying to include subtle family resemblances

artist notes: - ty's eyes are the same color as tessa's - lucie and livvy have the same hair color, while the rest of the brunette blackthorns have tessa’s hair - ash has sebastian’s coloring but clary/jocelyn’s features - alec, anna, and kit have the same blue eyes as will and cecily, but i actually picture kit's eyes to be lighter. i just draw too many blonde haired/blue eyed characters - the blackthorns were the most fun to draw :>

ok so as much as "bad law is no law" absolutely slaps as a blackthorn family motto i think "family before law" is such a blackthorn coded phrase in the context of the clave and i was surprised that gabriel was the one who said that! it's also interesting that tatiana (formerly a lightwood) does marry into the blackthorn family yet her motivations stem less from family preservation and more from pure revenge and personal vengeance.

and the lightwoods being portrayed as very law obedient in tmi (specifically alec) but virtually exercising "family before law" throughout the rest of the series and we see it with isabelle in the sampler of the wicked powers too. while in clockwork prince gabriel throws it while trying to support his already deranged father (who is not a good person by any means) later on lightwoods seem to uphold the law but be willing to break it for people they love (jace/alec/clary).

once again wondering how much of the wording/plotting was done in advance for certain characters and families.

I just read Lady Midnight for the first time.

I thought nothing could beat Jace and Clary’s relationship. But oh God, why did no one tell me I would cry my eyes out with Julian and Emma? And I am only in book 1. Book 1! And these characters... I feel like I need to write a whole review but idk where to post it.
