“Being transgender is not just about identity—it’s about courage, authenticity, and living your truth in a world that often asks you to hide it. This Pride, I celebrate every step of my journey, every challenge I’ve overcome, and every reason I have to stand tall, proud, and unapologetically myself.” 🏳️⚧️
Black Trans Allyship
Supporting Black trans people as an ally means combining trans allyship with anti-racism because Black trans people face uniquely compounded discrimination. Here are meaningful, concrete ways to help:
🌱 1. Listen, Believe, and Center Black Trans Voices
Follow Black trans activists, creators, and thinkers.
Share their work with credit, not over it.
Believe Black trans people’s experiences without debating or minimizing them.
💵 2. Provide Material Support
Black trans people face disproportionate barriers in housing, healthcare, and employment.
Support can include:
Donating to Black trans mutual aid funds.
Supporting Black trans-owned businesses.
Contributing to housing or surgery GoFundMes.
If you hire, actively create opportunities for Black trans candidates.
🛡️ 3. Intervene in Anti-Blackness and Transphobia
Challenge biased comments in your family, workplace, and social circles.
Shut down racist or transphobic jokes even when no Black trans people are present.
Use your privilege to take on the emotional labor that Black trans people are unfairly burdened with.
⚖️ 4. Advocate for Policies That Protect Black Trans Lives
Push for:
Inclusive healthcare access.
Anti-discrimination protections.
Police accountability and alternatives to policing.
Housing and employment protections for trans communities.
Write to local representatives, attend meetings, vote in local elections, and support organizations fighting for these changes.
🤝 5. Show Up in Community Spaces
Attend protests, rallies, vigils, and community events led by Black trans groups.
Volunteer for trans-led organizations. Don’t expect praise or leadership roles show up to support, not to center yourself.
📚 6. Educate Yourself (Don’t Make Black Trans People Teach You)
Explore:
Histories of Black trans activists (Marsha P. Johnson, Miss Major, Raquel Willis).
Books, documentaries, podcasts on anti-racism and gender liberation.
The specific ways racism and transphobia intersect.
🧠 7. Check Your Privilege and Biases
Reflect on how race and gender privilege show up in your actions.
Accept correction without defensiveness.
Understand that allyship is ongoing, not a label you earn once.
🌈 8. Celebrate Black Trans Joy
Support art, film, music, and writing by Black trans creators.
Amplify success stories not just trauma.
Uplifting joy can be just as crucial as addressing harm.
❤️ 9. Support Their Safety and Well-Being
Offer rides, accompaniment, or safe company if asked.
Help navigate hostile spaces (medical, legal, work-related).
Respect pronouns, chosen names, and boundaries always.
do you feel me tugging on our red string?
i wonder if you smell my perfume in public and turn around.
do you see me in other people?
Have you yet realized how mundane society is without my laughter? without my colors? without my truth? without my never ending spillage of words?
One authentic person can ruin the way you see the world. They break you out of the spell. Though i think you lean into the spell out of fear, out of comfortability. the world is already against us, why play into it?
