Nach ledernen Lenkergriffen für mein Fahrrad stand auch für mich ein blanket strap ganz oben auf der Liste. Der Deckengurt, der von nun an mein Begleiter sein wird, unterscheidet sich nur in Details vom ersten Versuch. Vor allem ist es der handgenähte Griff (aus zwei gleichstarken Riemen), der ins Auge sticht. Damit bin ich sehr zufrieden, denn meine Handnähte werden immer regelmäßiger und dadurch ansprechender.
Und ich habe wieder etwas gelernt: Wenn man spätnachts noch an solchen Projekten arbeitet, sollte man es tunlichst vermeiden, zwei offene Gläser mit klaren Flüssigkeiten (in meinem Fall Gummi-Arabicum-Lösung und Lederöl) nebeneinander auf dem Werktisch stehen zu haben. Es ging nochmal gut, da ich die Verwechslung schnell genug gemerkt habe, aber einen Quasi-Sperrgrund (Gummi Arabicum) dort aufzutragen, wo eigentlich Öl hin soll, kann man getrost als vermeidbaren Fehler betrachten.
Sei´s drum – es ist ja nichts passiert und die Salzach-Saison kann kommen!
After the heavy rainfalls and floodings of the past week, the weather in Salzburg presents us with a little sun. A welcome reason for me to make some summer acoutrements.
Having completed a set of leather grips for my bicycle, I made a blanket strap for myself. It's only a couple of minor details that make this a little different from the first one, which I made for an acquaintance. The most noticeable feature of this piece is the handstitched handle. I must admit I am quite content with the way my stitching develops. It's getting pretty regular and therefore nice to look at.
One thing I could've done without, was accidentally applying gum arabic on one of the strap loops during treating the unfinished pieces with a coat of neatsfoot oil. You just shouldn't let two unscrewed glasses with similar-looking liquids sit on top of your workbench, never ever! Fortunately, I became aware of my mistake within seconds and could wipe the stuff off without any further trouble.
Well, lesson learned – and off I go, to a nice place in the sun.
