Surely it's just a case of adding context to the story. Add a little build up, even if it's boring and mundane that just plays up the narrative of the unsuspecting victim of horror stories. Then the exaggerated reactions from people around you. And finally something clever to say about the whole thing that you thought up months later in hind sight. Or say you get into fights.
