March 26, 2000, The Kingdome in Seattle, WA is brought to the ground. The Kingdome was named after King county and the residents that lived within it’s borders. Though the Kingdome was demolished in 2000 it would not be until 2015 for the bond on the stadium to be paid off in full.
Seattle’s first Major league team the Seattle Pilots did not use the stadium, but after the team left for Milwaukee the city, county and state legislature sued the American League for breach of contract and were awarded the new expansion team to be known as the Seattle Mariners. The Kingdome had some horrible site lines for baseball games due in large part that it was designed as a football venue then altered for baseball. When it came to baseball the Kingdome was hitter friendly and especially as the Mariners began to win in the early 1990’s. The dome was very loud with concrete acoustics and speakers in the field of play. People often remember the tiles from the roof falling into the stands from a pressure washing on the dome’s roof that went the wrong way. The water logged roof gave way before a game with four tiles weighing twenty-size pounds each landed in the stands. The last homerun in the Kingdome was hit by Ken Griffey Jr. who also hit a homerun in his first at bat in the Kingdome.
