Well, you may be wondering now: なんじゃこりゃあ？！ (What the hell is this?!) I found the "after" image when I was tidying up my BLEACH folder. I remember creating it soon after chapter 423 was released; I don't recall posting it here, though. I think I posted it in the old IchiRuki FC on Bleach Asylum. This comparison shows the original image of Ichigo and Rukia's parting scene and the edited scene based on the position of their feet on the previous page's last panel. Apparently, judging from this comparison, they were once closer than they ended up being in the original parting scene. My guess is that they might have been within arms' reach but somehow they stepped back, away from each other? I remember reading a great post here on tumblr about how "they both want to hold on or reach out to each other or simply never let go", and I think the awfully close proximity between Ichigo and Rukia shown in the edited scene is consistent with this post. Maybe they were that close because they wanted to hold each other...but somehow they just couldn't bring themselves to do it. So, in the end, they maintained distance in an attempt to restrain themselves from clinging on to each other. There are too many reasons why chapter 423 is one of the most poignant and heartbreaking, heart-bleeding chapters ever in the history of BLEACH.
