absolutely incredible and kubo did her dirty in the last arc which made me so angry that i started working on a zanpakutō for her (because she DOES have one!!!! we don’t know anything about it but that it exists!!!!!) and frankly kubo should hire me to rewrite the last arc bc i’m awesome and i don’t hate women

The two least realistic moments in Bleach:

1. When Ginjou told Ichigo he should hate Soul Society and Ichigo didn't respond with "fuck soul society lives"

2. When Aizen told Orihime she should smile more and wasn't immediately incinerated by sheer rage

Gin's character would've been a hundred times better if Kubo hadn't gone with the whole "he wanted to get back the piece of Rangiku's soul that Aizen took".

There wasn't enough buildup for that to be a good twist, and both Gin and Aizen's characters would have benefited from a different backstory.

Instead of revenge, we could have had Aizen finding a kid way out in Rukongai with high reiatsu and a grudge against shinigami for letting the place stay so shitty. We could have had Aizen manipulate that's grudge and twist an already screwed up kid into the sadistic monster we met in the Soul Society arc.

For me, that would have pulled Gin away from the "jerkass with a sad backstory" trope and made him an actual tragic villain instead of a half-assed last-minute attempt at one. It also would be a better explanation for why Ichigo didn't feel anything the first time they fought, make Gin more sympathetic, and make Aizen both a more frightening villain and a more manipulative one - it would even make it easier to believe how deeply involved he was in Ichigo's life because this isn't the first time he's done that.

Honey, I think it would make Gin and Rangiku's relationship more interesting as well. Rather than "friends with a weird romantic undertone" we couldn't have Rangiku desperately trying to to figure out if the Gin she knew as a kid even exists anymore, and Gin slowly realizing how much he's given up to a man who never cared about him to begin with.

It would also continue the trend started in the Soul Society arc of the narrative actually acknowledging how fucked up the whole system is. Not only that, but it would make the contrast between Gin and Hitsugaya more clear and more relevant. Both grew up in Rukongai with a friend they wanted to protect, both suffered from isolation due to the differences that set them apart from their peers, both were geniuses who graduated from the academy in under a year, etc. The biggest difference between the two backstory-wise would be who they had to look up to and lean on for support (Aizen for Gin, Isshin for Hitsugaya).

It would connect Gin as an antagonist to all six of the main characters as well - Rukia and Renji both grew up in Rukongai, Ishida hates Shinigami, Orihime only got out of her awful situation because her brother saved her, Chad understands what it's like to be visibly different in a society that isn't too accepting of difference, and Ichigo was manipulated by Aizen as well.

Basically what I'm saying is that a whole chunk of Bleach would have been overall better and more interesting if Kubo had put more effort into his secondary antagonist's backstory and not just done the laziest thing he could think of.

Friendly reminder that Soul Society has an entire prison for people who haven't done anything yet but have scary ideas and they threw a literal child in there
