What's the buzz about Brazil's Cigarra?

Born in the Brazilian capital of São Paulo but currently based out of Lisbon, Ágatha ‘Cigarra’ Barbosa is a producer and DJ with a passion for celebrating global female sounds. As the boss of Tropical Twista Records, she’s curated and released two volumes of the all-female Hystereofônica compilations, which feature cutting edge artists from Badsista to BLEID in a laudable attempt to provide “visibility to half of the planet that lives in the shadow of the history.”

Barbosa’s own music as Cigarra is also worth celebrating. A sharp sample-hunter with an assured rhythmic touch, she’s been developing a folklorica sound that reinterprets and reinvigorates traditional music. Take her latest track ‘Baileia’ for instance, which sounds a bit like Nicolas Jaar jamming with the water-slapping women of Vanuatu:

The Cigarra show doesn’t stop there either. As a DJ and promoter Barbosa has been deeply involved in São Paulo’s Voodoohop and Lisbon’s Ancestofuturismo parties, with her sets exploring a similar rhythmic range to her music.
