Like he could “sense” people approaching and leaving, spells coming for him and away, by being very in tune with the magic in his environment. Yes I know Toph from ATLA!! :D I grew up watching the hel out of ATLA, actually, and she and Matt Murdock from Netflix's Daredevil are the main inspirations for the AU. I'm writing some fic for it currently, feeling out the tone and the characterization changes that happen with the concept. One of the biggest things is that Hogwarts is semi-sentient, and her magic sort of aligns with Sev's to help him out (he never has trouble with the trick steps and moving staircases, for example) and she provides him with a layout of sorts, so he doesn't have to memorize the whole freaking castle.
His magic is also a big part of his potion making, he senses the magical changes in the brew instead of going by color, like he otherwise would! I definitely think he'd do the same with duelling--being able to "see" peoples magical auras and even detecting spells faster than people do when they rely on their eyesight.
Its one of the things that made Toph such a good earthebender! She didn't use her eyes, and vibrations and heartbeats are a lot more telling than visual cues. Same with magic, because magic is all about intent.
Also, Sev here is a fey (a magical race inspired by the faerie-court type literature things that i composed myself), with much more sensitive senses to begin with. He had very keen eye-sight before Lupin bit him in fifth year, and his hearing is extremely sensitive. So not only can Severus "see" sort of like Toph, he has that superhuman hearing that helps Daredevil so much in most of season one.
Also, Severus' need to get in tune wjth his magic has helped accelerate his affinity for it, and made him a more powerful wizard. There's going to be a Thing about how powerful blind wizards are (and how rare they are, given magical medical miracles) and how people underestimate Severus' magical power so much.
