"Dronning" EP by Blod Maud

I've mentioned Blød Maud here previously, but they just released a new EP that is very good. That means more talking about Blød Maud!

Their new EP Dronning comes seven months after their self-titled debut, on which they crafted a space submerged in gentle distortion, both lyrical and sonic. The music never makes it to the binary reaches of "happy" or "sad" because it's always invoking one through twisting the other. All over the album are guitar melodies that initially seem cracked or broken in some way, but their subversive pop-qualities keep them rattling around my head long after. Thematically, the lyrics are anchored by an oceanic fascination, with song titles like "Dredge," "Disembark," "Autumn Harbor," and "Shallow Water." Dronning slyly nods to the album's themes with its title, but concern for the sea ends there.

"Goose Flesh" starts the EP with only Emily Crossen's voice and her admission that her nerves of steel have become shorted, faulty wires. This builds up to the command, "Pull the rug out/I won't fall," which lets loose a guitar riff that recalls The Strokes at their heaviest. American imagery such as "You lost your shit when you split in half/You've got my life on paper/You've got my wires tapped" depict the country as a bumbling but powerful idiot, and show that they can still fierce in the face of something so much bigger than themselves - they're just tackling a land-mass rather than a body of water. The two tracks that follow, "Golden Age of Cinema" and "Sunday," are gauzier than anything on their self-titled, but are propelled by similar signifiers - dissonant leads, melodic bass, and urgent drums. "Red Birds" contains many of these elements as well, but rather than show how they can interlock with each other in surprising ways, they seem to examine each one separately. 

The highlight of Dronning, and one of Blød Maud's best songs yet, is closer "Separated By A Small Stream." It comes off like a Derek Cianfrance movie with moments of bliss marred by the knowledge that things don't end well for these two people. The song begins with grainy atmospherics and a muffled phone conversation, interrupted by a languid guitar line that leaves us wondering what the woman might have been calling for. Corporeal imagery is incorporated along the way, with lines such as "Cold hands inside warm sheets, a salt-sweat taste on my tongue/The red lenses we saw through to match our cheeks and lapel pins" being so precise that they feel invasive. It all ends climatically: Crossen concludes that "we ground it into dust," while the rhythm section grinds under GY!BE-like slide guitar and cassette screels, reminding me that it all started with a conversation we were never meant to hear.

I'll say now that my position on Blød Maud is completely biased: Not only are they a native Pittsburgh band, but I used to play music with Pat, the drummer, in college. Whether that colors your perspective on my commentary doesn't really matter to me. I enjoy listening to their music, and enjoy writing about it. That's what this place is all about! Either way, if you devote any of your time listening to them, then I feel that I've succeeded. In lieu of that spirit, I hope to start highlighting more music by Pittsburgh bands. We've got a close-knit and supportive music community here that I think is really special, and something that would be hard to replicate in the big cities. We also have many talented, unheard-of musicians working in the overlooked playground that is Pittsburgh, making it a great place win pretentious-points for finding obscure bands, which is obviously the only reason people listen to music, right? ("Oh, you probably haven't heard of them, they're from Pittsburgh" is a sentence that sounds eerily plausible in the mouth of a stereotypical "hipster"). Also, I'll most likely post music from my friends from time to time without much apprehension, because I've been lucky enough to have friends that make great music.

Okay, that's all I got for now. I look forward to posting more frequently in the future as I get better at taking less than, ya know, 3 full days to write something as simple as EP reviews. Thanks!

I'm lucky enough to know some of the people in this band. They write post-punk with supremely dark-overtones, but I love how they subversively sneak in pop melodies to their choruses. It's unsettling music that you can sing along to, which seems super rare. I really enjoy their sound, which is why I'm excited for their next album (which has been recorded for the most part).
