Blönduós, Iceland. (2013)
Wearing donated meat-packing uniforms and lamb hides, Blonduos welcomed us in a very special way. My horoscope that week instructed me to head to the dumpster for art supplies so we did just that. We found industrial scrap metal structures and later wove yarn patterns onto them. All of our materials were locally harvested or donated and then returned and recycled again.

NES Artist Residency - Days Five, Six, Seven and Eight / June 5, 6, 7, 8 2016
Dreamtime Contending with Reality
Time. Thinking about it is overwhelming. Time here behaves differently than I’ve ever experienced before. Days seem to pass in a flash, but I could stay awake all night, never eat and never sleep. It’s got me thinking about the shape of the Planet and the shape of time. Does time go in a line, or in a circle? I’m a firm believer time moves in a circle. If the Earth spins on an axis, and Iceland being at 66 degrees north, we have less distance to travel through space to rotate in a day, so therefore we’re moving slower here, but the days seem shorter but they are in fact the same length as any of place on Earth. It never gets dark here during summer, the days never end and never begin. I may be loosing my mind, or finding a whole new one… time will tell.
Blönduós
A group of us took a trip to the next town along - Blönduós. The main purpose for our expedition was to visit the artists in residency at Blönduós Textile Residency. They’d come to visit us at NES on Sjómannadagsins (Fishermans Day), and offered to repay the favour. There were exciting things going on with felt and wool and 100 year old looms. Next door there’s museum of textiles that celebrated Iceland’s rich heritage of wooden things and tapestry and held exhibitions for textile artists from around Iceland. In the photos you can see some of the pieces from the current exhibit. Delicate felted circles resembling lace, but fluffy, containing more colours than what first meets the eye. http://textile.is/english-2/
After feasting our eyes on the fabrics and textures we feasted our tummies at the local cafe, followed by a swim in the Blönduós swimming pool. If there’s one thing Icelanders know how to do, it’s swimming pools. This one had 2 big hot pots (hot tubs), an icy cold tub, a shallow pool with a big mushroom shaped shower to play under, steam-room, 24 meter swimming pool and, the cherry on top, 2 waterslides. In our group we had people from age 24 to 70 + but for an hour or 2 we were all 7 again.
Artist Talks
On June 8th we finally had all the months ‘artists in residence’ assembled in Skagaströnd so it was time for artist talks, followed by a big celebratory meal at Borgin’s (the only restaurant in Skagaströnd). We had 10 minutes each to tell the group about ourselves and more importantly, about our art. Hailing from all over the globe, everyone had something truly unique and bright to share. I’m very glad to be experiencing this time with this amazing group. Thankful!
Just got back home from my month long artist in residency trip to Iceland! It was amazing <3 Here are a few pictures, May was really a good month to go, because as you can kind of see in these pictures, it started out as still a bit winter-ish and then through the month everything turned a beautiful, lush green as spring arrived. It was so beautiful! It was very productive too, I finished a dress for Poppedijn and a bunch of other things too, but more about that later <3
Tomorrow, I’m getting back to work, so commissions for corsets will be open again soon, and there will be a little event as well 8D So keep your eyes open! ;)
