Weird question, but does anyone else have “catharsis reads” that they come back to? I don’t mean “comfort reads,” as in something that comforts you, but a “catharsis read” as in something you turn to when you’re wanting to work through/feel out some heavy emotions
Synopsis: Eleanor is the new girl in town, and she's never felt more alone. All mismatched clothes, mad red hair and chaotic home life, she couldn't stick out more if she tried.
Then she takes the seat on the bus next to Park. Quiet, careful and - in Eleanor's eyes - impossibly cool, Park's worked out that flying under the radar is the best way to get by.
Slowly, steadily, through late-night conversations and an ever-growing stack of mix tapes, Eleanor and Park fall in love. They fall in love the way you do the first time, when you're 16, and you have nothing and everything to lose.
Set over the course of one school year in 1986, Eleanor & Park is funny, sad, shocking and true - an exquisite nostalgia trip for anyone who has never forgotten their first love.

Review: I liked this book, it made me cry at a few points, and the story was emotionally moving and insightful on many occasions. The ending, too, was realistic and left a sense of “well what happens next?” but I feel like that was the point, the conclusion was for the reader to decide and that depends on whether the reader is an optimist or a pessimist or their general view of what it means to be 17 years old and in “love.”
I liked the story, it was gripping for me, and I found I concentrated on it far better than I previously have when it comes to reading. It was easy to digest even though there were some points that left me with a cathartic sort of sadness, especially towards the end.
However I have some qualms with the characters depictions. There were a lot of east-asian stereotypes being perpetrated throughout this novel, and there were slurs used which from memory I think was on two occasions; but it could have been more than that. If you google search “Eleanor and Park racism” in google, people far more certified than me to discuss this have.
Overall, it was a good book, and it really brought up memories for me too, it left me with a strange sense of both nostalgia and just very intense sadness, but that’s probably because of my interpretation of the ending.
