Disco #225: Blotted Science - The Machinations of Dementia

         El metal más extremo lo escuché un tiempo, pero nunca entré a quererlo demasiado. Coincidentemente estuve hablando de Dorso (#224), pero eso es lo más extremo que podría escuchar hoy. No porque no lo soporte, sino porque ahora escucho tanta variedad de estilos musicales que el metal extremo se me va de esa amplitud.

        Aun así, existen bandas que usan ciertas cosas del estilo pero les dan su propia impronta, como es el caso de Blotted Science, banda formada por, a estas alturas, el mítico bajista de Cannibal Corpse, Alex Webster, además de Ron Jarzombek en guitarra (y compositor y productor de la banda) y Charlie Zeleny en batería. Ellos forman un power trío instrumental, haciendo música que sería catalogada posteriormente como metal progresivo (debido a la complejidad), pero con influencias del metal extremo.

        El primer disco que sacaron bajo este nombre es “The Machinations of Dementia”, el que además era el nombre original de esta banda en un principio. Son 16 canciones dotadas con una complejidad y urgencia poco vistas en estos proyectos al tiempo que salió (2007). Además, los nombres de las canciones están basados en enfermedades mentales o antídotos para las mismas, lo que lo hace aún más denso de asimilar.

        Mi llegada a ellos fue por el mismo amigo de Dorso, pero él, sabiendo que me gustaba escuchar música, me mostró este disco. Esa primera vez que lo escuché fue casi como sentir que estaba escuchando algo nuevo para mí, a pesar de que todos los elementos que sonaban los había escuchado en diferentes lugares; no todo al mismo tiempo. Fue como un golpe en el estómago, recuperándome al pasar el disco.

        Blotted Science sacó un EP más en el 2011 y no hay más de ellos. Sería una lástima que no saquen más cosas, porque suenan como nadie más que ellos. Denso, pero novedoso. Y al darle vueltas al disco “The Machinations of Dementia”, siempre pareciese que fuese la primera vez. Eso, a mí, no me pasa con muchas bandas. Por lo tanto, aunque sea por curiosidad, vale la pena escucharlo. Tortuoso, pero un placer.

Jukebox Writing Prompt

I hope I find you well on whatever day you’re reading this post. It’s time once again to my Jukebox Writing Prompt.

For those of my new followers, I will go over the history of the challenge here. I look through my library and pick out titles that look like they would make a good story. Each playlist is as close to eighty minutes as possible. This is because CD-R’s could only hold up to eighty minutes and I used to put together burned CD’s with songs in an order which told a story. I shuffle the playlist until it seems like a good order and then put them here as a challenge for other writers to do.

Here are the rules for the challenge. Then write a flash fiction or short story while working the title of each song in the order they are on the list. Everything aside from the song titles is completely up to you to create. It is not important whether or not you know the songs, but if you like metal then you should check them out. That is to say that the message of the song is not used in any of the story, only the title.

For this specific challenge, I’m only using songs that I have not yet shared on my music sharing group @greatnewmusicgnm . The order that I have them here is not important because I did not randomize this list. So the matter of which song title goes where is entirely up to you.
