The Salvation Army was active in bringing families, domestic servants, farm boys and war orphans to New Zealand and other Commonwealth countries during the 1920s. In that decade some 86,000 immigrants came to New Zealand. Some boys were sent to the Salvation Army's farm at Putaruru, and trained for future work on the land. The depression in the later part of the 1920s meant that a restriction was placed on numbers of immigrants from 1927 onwards, but domestic servants, older single women, and parties of boys under the Church of England and Flock House schemes were generally accepted.
