80 metros bajo tierra The High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) is an upgrade of the LHC to achieve instantaneous luminosities a factor of five larger than the LHC nominal value, thereby enabling the experiments to enlarge their data sample by one order of magnitude compared with the LHC baseline programme. Following five years of design study and R&D, this challenging project requires now about ten years of developments, prototyping, testing and implementation; hence operation is expected to start in the middle of the next decade. The timeline of the project is dictated by the fact that, at the beginning of the next decade, many critical components of the accelerator will reach the end of their lifetime due to radiation damage and will thus need to be replaced. The other day I had the chance to do an experiment at the ALICE detector, in a cavern buried 60 m underground, part of the LHC at @cern It was like a dream ❤️ This was a sonic rite. It consisted on a listening session of the performance of the place, guided by a sonic sculpture that acts as a medium between worlds. The sculpture becomes a parasite of the place and through environmental sensing, real time mapping, and six speakers, it diffuses the chant of the apparently silent agents around us. In places where the natural and technological collide there are particular disturbances that are transduced by this parasitic medium to create a poem that is imprinted in our collective material memory. Become a membrane and resonate like a drum. Connect with your quark-gluon plasma origins. Shake your material existence, and let this parasitic medium guide you through a concert of a specific moment in space and time. This is an exercise of listening to emerge together, stimulate perception, confuse reality, and resonate with the sense that we are as much part of nature as we are part of culture.
