This passport thing just gets worse the more I think about it. First of all, the the government decides what the passports look like, not the EU, so if we were really that desperate to change the colour, we could have just done it.
Second of all, anyone under the age of 30 isn't getting the passport's "back" because we never had them to begin with.
Third, the old passports were black, not blue, so this isn't even a decent attempt at nostalgia.
This doesn't solve all the shitty economic effects of brexit, nor does it change the fact that you will be able to do less with the passport.
From what I've seen of the new design, it looks worse and is harder to read.
Honestly this feels symbolic of brexit as a whole, a shitty, weird embarrassing attempt to turn the clock back to when Britain was actually relevant on the international stage with all the shitty, backwards imperialist and racist implications that entails.
Here’s the thing about the passports that pisses me off: It’s basically a microcosm of proving that Brexit isn’t about anything tangible, it’s a glorified nostalgia trip for the older generations and a chance to feel like they’re getting the world back to the way they remember it before it collectively made decades of progress without them.
Because to them, having a blue passport is some massively important symbol of national identity, apparently.
But the vast majority of younger people have never known any passports other than the burgundy ones. So it’s not getting an old bit of British history back from the evil EU, it’s just the UK government giving the baby boomers some petty fucking irrelevant bit of nonsense to make them feel better.
And that’s what this whole shitshow is about, really; making the old Tory-voting bastards have a lovely nostalgia trip before they die and leave the younger of us with shit we don’t want or care about but that they thought was really important.
We don’t need blue passports to suddenly make us love the UK, we don’t need to piss off Europe to suddenly make us love the UK, we don’t need to cut ourselves off and pretend we’re so important to suddenly make us love the UK.
We need the UK government to actually give a shit about us rather than wasting time and effort on making the old regressive cretins feel better about themselves.
The divide in terms of support for Brexit between the young and the old exists for a reason; by and large, we just don’t see any of this shit as being as important as the older generations do.
Keep your fucking blue passports, actually do something to benefit people in real tangible terms.
