City of Ashes review

I finished City of Ashes. It was not as 'page turning' as City of Bones. There was less exposition, but more teenage angst drama. This review is NOT spoiler free. I dislike the way Clare interrupts dialogue with dialogue tags. It stops the flow of reading, especially when there are only two character speaking. in every dialogue tag there's a description of what their face is doing, or how their eyes are dark. There was also repetition, such as with being reminded that Jace has blonde curly hair in every chapter. I didn't really care for Simon's character in the beginning - and I still don't. He is too similar to Jace. They are both sarcastic jerks, only Simon has a little less arrogance. But his character seemed reliant on his love for Clary, his only purpose, which made his character flimsy and one-sided. When he became a vampire, I literally threw the book down. I am not a vampire fan, or the whole "vampire romance angst" genre, so this new angle was a downer for me. At least Simon has a slightly better character angle. Every POV is similar, not like they are coming from different characters. I'm also turned off by the "who's your real daddy" game that's being played with Jace. It's part of the teenage angst social drama that is the plot fuel - if you remove the romance from the story, there really isn't a story left. I don't like how these YA books make is so everybody has to be in a romantic relationship. It pressures young adults to be in relationships and tells them that if they're not, something is wrong with them. I'm also tired of the way Clare inserted similes that don't mean anything. Don't tell me what it's 'like' tell me what it is. I know that if I was younger when I started this series then I'd like it more. But I've had too much experience with story telling, so my view is biased. However, I enjoy the awkward relationship between Jace and Clary. Magnus feels too stereotypical. Alec's plight is believable and adorable to read through. Would I recommend? Sure. It was entertaining, although a bit juvenile.

I'm taking a break from The a Mortal Instruments series to read Naked Heat, which I did not know was a real book! I'm big Castle fan, and when I was reshelfing books today I saw it, and had a tiny, silent freak out. Sill post my review of City of Ashes later tonight. Right now, Naked Heat. But...who actually wrote this book?

I finished part two of "City of Bones" today, and while my irks of part 1 still stand, I confess I couldn't stop reading. I devoured part 2 in less than 2 sittings. First, I enjoyed the parallel between Clary and Simon's relationship to Jace and Alec's. It shine a new light on unmirrored affection. Second, kind of inline with my first, U.S. that I fell in love with Alec's plight of identity. I am straight, so I didn't go through a sexually crisis as gay people do, and I find the entire journey of finding and being comfortable with sex and gender utterly fascinating. Alec's character is not defined by his homosexuality, but rather is added to, it's part of him, part of who he is, and he doesn't know how to handle it. He has feeling for his best friend who won't see him like that, ever, and it's heartbreaking and adorable. I'm glad we got through all the exposition, because the story, drama, and action all sped up. Every time Hodge stepped into the scene he had to explain something. Glad he's out of the way.

I finished the first part of "City of Bones" tonight, and while I am enjoying the story, there are a few things that have kind of irked me. First, EXPOSITIONAL FORESHADOWING OVERLOAD. On my, like everything was so overly obvious in the beginning that her parents were involved in this Shadowhunter thing and that she inherited it. I get that the book is in the "young adults" genre, so I do keep that in mind, but still, foreshadowing was heavy. Second, a style thing, the over use of similes. I like a good simile don't give me wrong, but there was one on every page, enough that I noticed them. To me that means there's too many. I get that it's a style choice, and every other has their own style, but. Third, I'm not a fan of the instant love triangle theme. it's like every young adult book needs to have some love triangle between the awkward protagonist girl and two handsome guys. It's getting to be a "thing" and I don't really like it. on that same note, the foreshadowing between Jace and Clary's relationship is kind of ridiculous However, the story is enjoyable, and the world is engaging. The characterization isn't horrible, but it's not the best.This is all my opinion of course, and opinions are as different as writing styles.

My Thoughts:

The Barefoot Queen is very well written. Ildefonso Falcones does an excellent job of writing in a way that you can feel transported to the time in which the book takes place. The characters are strong intelligent women who overcome adversity. The setting is 18th century Spain, an era where the gypsy people were persecuted. The main characters are two women - Caridad, a freed slave, and Milagros, a Gypsy who has always been surrounded by love and family. It is a somewhat graphic and violent novel. Falcones vividly describes  brutality, the sexual abuse of women, and the murder of innocent people. The Barefoot Queen is good read for someone with patience, as it is a lengthy novel. Overall, I found this novel to be an intriguing read, but I do not foresee myself reading it again in the future.
