on lavender and i's very first date which was not intended to be a date at the time but makes sense to be called that in retrospect we went to a ren faire and ate some fucking incredible philipino food sold by a lady in small tent and walked around and drank weird root beer and got little chainmail bracelets (i lost mine and i miss it every day but lavender wears theirs daily...) and specifically near the end as the sun was going down i discovered a big patch of madder root growing on the fairgrounds and started furiously digging it up while lavender was off doing something else with the other friends we'd come with and they came back to find me completely arms deep in dirt and all scratched up from thorns pulling on various plants with deadly seriousness and they were so confused and delighted and agreed to hold a flashlight for me so i could effectively use my knife to cut a big chunk of root free, which i clutched in my very filthy hands the whole car ride back. anyway. they later told me that that night was when they realized they were in love with me

How beautiful the leaves grow old. How full of light and color are their last days.

Snow on a spruce, January 2021.
Someday, she will fall, our beloved tall spruce here—but not today, dear, not just now, she whispered in my ear
Un jour, elle tombera, notre grande épinette bien-aimée ici - mais pas aujourd’hui, chérie, pas tout à l’heure, elle m’a chuchoté à l’oreille
