Landmark philanthropic support for coastal communities and small-scale fishers - Blue Ventures

Small-scale fishers and coastal communities across the tropics are set to gain renewed support thanks to a landmark USD 62 million gift to B

Midweek break to share some good news (from December 2025).

Blue Ventures is a nonprofit focused on rebuilding small-scale fisheries and making coastal communities and their ecosystems more resilient by leading with local knowledge and leadership. Part of Blue Ventures's 2030 strategy is to empower 10,000 communities to lead their own fisheries management and marine conservation along with funding, data and training to keep the work sustainable. The org was gifted a significant donation from MacKenzie Scott, to the tune of USD 62 million. 62 million. Just let that sink in a sec.

There's a lot going on in the world right now and it feels good to take a minute and appreciate something good happening.

Lionfish jewelry

This is kind of a reminder to myself. Pay no attention to that woman behind the curtain! I recently saw an article about lionfish spine jewelry made by women in Belize. It looked very cool, and I'd live to get some to support lionfish eradication. I heard about it through an organization called Blue Ventures.

Combating the Invasive Lionfish—by Wearing Them

The venomous and invasive lionfish, native to the Indo-Pacific, is a serious threat to endemic species in the Caribbean and up the Atlantic coast. For several years, people in Sarteneja, Belize, have been harvesting the fish to eat—and now they're using the fish's spines to make jewelry.

A great feature by National Geographic on lionfish jewelry and the work Blue Ventures is doing in Belize to help develop that business and for the local community to keep hunting lionfish.

Marine conservation, family planning, aquaculture, social entrepreneurship. This hits ALL the right buttons for me. The health of our environment, whether build or natural, marine or terrestrial, is inextricable from human health. This is so important.
