i've been thinkin about seeing it!! is it heavily connected to the original or does it work as a standalone film?

It’s a direct sequel, meaning characters that are in the first movie do pop up, and there’s a few references and winks and nods, but you can still watch it as it is and have a good time and understand what’s going on.
