Finders Keepers. My new addition to my air element. #bluejayfeather
Our 2022 art exhibit “Fine Feathers: at play with structure and function” is on display until October 31. Dr. Kimberly Schultz and Dr. Jon Hyde are a husband/wife team who have traveled nationally and internationally photographing wildlife and working on a variety of projects. Their accomplishments are numerous, and you can read more about them on the Saint Michael's College website where they are both Professors of Media Studies, Journalism, and Digital Arts. Their work has been published and/or exhibited in many venues including the the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the San Diego Museum of Natural History and the Ward Museum. This is the third time they have exhibited at the Birds of Vermont Museum, and they have two pieces in this year's show. Feathers derive their color from pigments and/or structure. Blue Jays have no blue pigment in their feathers. They appear blue because of the feather's intricate structure; creating a phenomenon called light scattering. When light hits a Blue Jay’s feathers only the blue light is reflected back giving us the illusion that the feather is blue. If a Blue Jay’s feather was crushed (not recommended!) and looked at with a magnifying glass the feather would look brown. #BlueJayFeather @saintmichaelscollege #Bird Fact (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci-BfIwuBuG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
