Coming in on the home stretch of #superfriendssunday 12 Days of Christmas Challenge: 11 Pipers Piping, an album with horns! I wanted one with not only horns (and there are a lot of great ones on this record) but also flute, as the title would suggest. Eric Dolphy is a favorite of mine, the perfect balance between accessible and “out there” jazz. An absolutely engrossing album, complete madness in Stockholm. Ornette Coleman is, as always, a melodic provocateur, further pushing people’s buttons by adding atonal violin and trumpet to his repertoire. But what gets me here are the drummer and bassist, who are going absolutely wild. They’re the stars for me.
