Bob Forrest, "Lonely are the brave", dir. David Miller, 1962.
The story behind John's rehabilitation - How Bob Forrest helped and saved his life.
The day when John Frusciante tried to save Layne Staley from his drugs addiction.
The Alternative Nation rescued a story from Bob Forrest's book "Running with Monsters: A Memoir", lead singer of Thelonious Monster and The Bicycle Thief. The singer reported in the work that he and guitarist John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers tried to help rescue the sobriety of Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley, who suffered from depression and died of an overdose of heroin and cocaine on April 5, 2002, at the age of 34.
The situation reported in the book dates back to mid-1999 or 2000, a few years before Layne Staley died. Bob Forrest was even the one who helped in 1998 to resume Frusciante's sobriety — who was reluctant to visit Staley, since he did not consider himself an example in the subject, but ended up participating after Forrest's insistence.
Initially, Bob called Layne's mother, Nancy, and said he would try to help, although he recognized that the visit might not be of any effectiveness.
She replied:
“Layne has a strange sense of humor. I told him that John suffered a gangrene and he said: 'In the arm? Mom, that's terrible. John is a guitarist, he needs his hands and arms. As for me, I'm just a singer, I can do without them.' I know he was kidding, but I don't like to hear that. Can you try talking to him?”
Willing to help, Forrest and Frusciante went to Staley's house in Seattle.
At the time, Bob Forrest and John Frusciante played video games together with Layne Staley. The singer said he was "all right" with him, "pretended" to listen to the advice and said "know why" the two were there.
In the book, it is reported that Alice in Chains' vocalist was “ with his mind still functioning, but a million kilometers away from reality. ”
Forrest remembers telling Frusciante, as soon as the two left: “I don't think he'll get out of this.” The guitarist's answer was: “it's his life, man.”
Layne Staley died in 2002 and Bob Forrest was disappointed. He stated that he thought it was possible to save someone from addiction with love, but that he could not rescue Staley, even though he loved him.
