We’re going to be releasing our second single ‘the British IBM’ this Wednesday 18th July. Part of the reason we’ve decided to release it on this particular date is because on this day in 1968 Intel was founded by Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore. We thought this was rather fitting.

In the very early '80s, Bob Noyce convinced Steve Jobs to join him on the board of trustees for Grinnell College, where I attended college and worked on the school paper. I heard that Steve was coming to town for a meeting and managed to schedule an interview for the Scarlet & Black. Steve was enthusiastic and engaging and we ended up conducting the interview while wandering the residential neighborhoods of Grinnell -- tree lined streets, big porches, lilacs blooming all around. It turned out that we grew up in the same home town and, even though he was 6 years older than I was, we swam on the same city swim team.  After the 90 minute interview, I wrote up a long and exuberant article about how Steve and his personal computers were going to change the world. Then I burst in on my favorite Economics professor to tell him all about it. My professor summed up his skepticism with one pithy phrase: "It'll never happen." Oh but it did Professor Bloch -- and even faster with more impact than Steve predicted at the time.
